Lea County BBQ & Music Fest, Hobbs, NM     8-15-09

Several teams from the North Texas area made the trip to this event which was held at the Zia Park & Black Gold Casino.  This event has potential to grow into a large event with plenty of room for the cookers.  Janna Watson did a great job making sure the all of the cooks were set up.  Dana and Kristi, with their husbands, did a great job of running the judging with all of the activities going on around.  The judging was held on the dance floor of the Sports Bar, next to the area to bet on the horses  with bands playing on the patio and the jingle of slot machines in the foreground.  Only 3 teams from Hobbs participated this year but with a little more advertisement I think that we will have more NM teams next year.  18 teams competed for the New Mexico State Championship title with Darby Neaves, Naaman’s Mustard Sauce being named Grand Champion with 24 points—and a tie for Reserve between Ronnie Wade, Blazen BBQ and Toni Maynard, Redneck Woman BBQ with 19 points.

Mark your calendar to do this event next year.

La Vernia Parks Foundation BBQ

August 7—8, 2009

Robert, Dennis and the community of volunteers are to be commended on a “Terrific” event...Cannot tell you how many times I have been asked …”How do they do it...they are filled long before the event”…  Well, I cannot tell you why the cooks come to this event but I can tell you that from the Head Judge’s standpoint they are dynamite.  Organized, helpful, agreeable and committed to making the best event possible for a cause they truly believe in.  They logged in 109 teams and 60 Kids Q participated on Friday night.  This is another event where it is obvious that there is a New Generation of BBQ cooks in Texas.  The volunteers, judges, and cooks are to be commended in every aspect for this cook off, it was a pleasure.  We, also, had a surprise when “Big Russ” flew in for the week-end and surprised this old lady and his niece.  He enjoyed visiting with the promoters and cooks...Again, Thanks to everyone for a successful event.

Our Hats off once again to the “LaVernia Parks Assn. BBQ Committee
