Next IBCA Meeting will be:
AUGUST 1, 2009
10:00 am til 4:00 p.m.
VFW Post 8787, 500 VFW Rd., Austin, TX
ANNUAL IBCA MEETING
The Annual IBCA Saturday meeting will once again be held
at the VFW Post 8787, 500 VFW Rd., Austin, TX. We have
found that this is a central location to hold the
meeting and the VFW has been gracious host in the past.
I have started contacting Promoters for free entries
into next year’s events and hope to come up with at
least 25 like we had last year in the raffle plus other
items.
As all of you know this is election year and we have
been asking for nominations for the Executive Director
and two (2) Board of Directors at large. This
organization’s Board of Directors consist of the
Executive Director, 2 Board of Directors at large and 2
representatives from each PIT. Last year we were
fortunate enough to have representation from 8 of the 10
PITS.
At this time we have the following nominations:
Executive Director: Dee Dee Barton and Gerald Maynard
Board of Directors at Large: Bob Barton, Dee Dee
Barton, Andy Hollerman, Gerald Maynard, Toni Maynard,
and Jeff Wyatt.
We will be accepting nominations from the floor at the
meeting.
Any
PROPOSED RULE CHANGES
must be submitted in writing, either e-mail or snail
mail, by
July 25, 2009
so that they can be included into the BOD meeting
agenda.
The VFW will be serving hamburgers for a minimal fee.
At this time we have one guest speaker, Craig Sharry,
Texas Pepper Jelly, who will talk about his jelly and
glaze merchandise.
We hope to see all of you at this meeting—remember it is
YOUR organization.
Nominee for Executive Director:
Dee Dee Barton
My name is Dee Dee Barton and I would like to be your next
Executive Director of the IBCA.
Having grown up in Austin, I am committed to utilizing my
creativity and arden leadership style to sustain our
organization’s reputation of being the best, most helpful
sanctioning body for the promoter and the fairest and best
in judging to the cooks. I have spent many years with IBCA
as a promoter, competitor, and Head Judge, aspiring through
my work to give people experiences and friendships they may
not have otherwise had. I want to honor and protect what
the founding fathers of IBCA started while being open to
suggestions and discussions of making our organization the
very best that it can be.
Working with the VFW Post 8787 Ladies Auxiliary for many
years and as it’s president for 2 years, I provided the same
aspiration, with a new focus: educating our children of
patriotism and the histories of past war veterans; something
they may not have without the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It
also gave us the opportunity to build one of the largest
cook-offs in Texas, “Chilly” Chili & BBQ Cook-off. Through
volunteerism and community service, the cook-off committee
at Post 8787 has supported many local and veteran charities
over the past 20 years.
As the manager of the Dept. of Geography and the Environment
at the University of Texas at Austin, I’m charged with
providing a detailed, attentive, integrated, ethical,
honest, pleasant, patient and committed member of the staff
who leads by example.
In my spare time, I hang out with my wonderful husband, Bob,
and our 8 dogs, 3 cats, 4 pigmy/dwarf goats and 2 miniature
paint geldings on five acres outside of Coupland, TX.
Together we have 5 grown daughters and 6 grandchildren. I’m
also learning how to knit, enjoy reading and we are always
trying to learn how to BBQ.
Nominee for Board of Director at Large
Andy Hollerman
I am a candidate for the IBCA BOD at Large. The objective
of my candidacy is to utilize my passion for BBQ to help
IBCA grow and prosper in the years to follow. Barbeque is
meant to be fun and inclusive for everyone. I want to work
as member of the BOD to continue this spirit of
inclusiveness in IBCA and barbeque in general. I, also,
want to continue development of the Louisiana Pit.
My wife, Lynn, and I currently live in Lafayette, LA with
our youngest daughter, Alex, where we are both employed by
UL Lafayette. We have been IBCA Head Judges for events in
LA. and East Texas since late 2007.
I fondly remember the day where I saw the footage of a
barbeque contest on television and stated when the segment
was concluded “I can do that”! Since then I have
participated in more than 100 BBQ contest as a cook, judge,
or contest official in locations all across the USA. We
enjoy meeting new friends and helping contest promoters
adjudicate their IBCA contest. In 2008 Lynn & I formed the
Glowz BBQ Team to compete in IBCA events—this name pays
homage to the fact that I have a living as a scientist,
studying substances that glow in the dark.
In addition, I am a Master Judge, Certified Table Captain,
and cook team member of the KCBS, a Certified MBA judge.
Barbeque is a big part of my life. I would consider it an
honor and privilege to represent IBCA on its Board of
Directors as we face the future with hope and good cheer.
IBCA is an organization of cookers who love and respect
barbeque and I want to be a part of that future.
Wilson County Showbarn BBQ, Floresville, TX
Dawn Mason reports that the Wilson
County Showbarn directors put on a terrific cook-off this
year. Albeit hotter than heck, it was tremendous fun with 5
more teams that last year. Thanks to all of the teams for
working with me and following the rules so well. I had a
super time with the Something with Mashed Potatoes jackpot.
I was amazed at the creativity and innovation displayed by
the cooks, there was even a candy and chocolate cake entered
with mashed potatoes. All I can say is WOW. A huge THANK
YOU to Craig & Christina Mutz for organizing everything so
well. This is a very special cook-off for me as we started
together and I sincerely hope that I am able to continue to
judge it in the
Lana
Schmidt-Morris reports that the Chisholm Trail Round-up BBQ
in Lockhart was a great event, which she stepped in as Head
Judge after Russ got transferred to Illinois with his
job. Donald Schneider and his committee did an awesome
and were willing to help with anything that we needed.
Michelle went to assist me, and we really enjoyed working
with the entire BBQ committee. They pulled in 81 wonderful
cooks with their families and friends. Donald even wore an
“Orange Shirt” to the announcements in honor of “Big Russ”
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL - If your membership
expires 8-31-2009 - it must be renewed prior to that date to
qualify for the IBCA added money at Traders Village in October.
I would like to say THANK YOU to all of our Head Judges
for going the extra mile to make sure that our events
are run as fairly and consistent as possible on any
given day.
IBCA is at the pace of 160+ events this year, that is a
growth of 20+ events, therefore some of us are spread
pretty thin.
If we could get each team to come in and work with some
of us and then run at least 1 event a year it would be a
big help. Without some additional help, we might be
forced into turning some events down.
A SHOOT’N, ROOT’N, TOOT’N GOOD TIME IN PENN VALLEY
By Kathleen McIntosh
When
the shooting started, I all but dived under the table
for cover. However, the man in front of me calmly took
another taste of the rib he was working on. “Sheriff!
What’s all that shoot’n bout? Asked one of the judges.
“Son,” said the Sheriff as he tipped his Stetson back.
“Don’t you know where you’re at? This is the Smokin’ in
the Oaks BBQ Cook-off and Mounted Shooting Competition.
How are they gonn’a win anything thing if they don’t
shoot at somethin’? Now pass me another rib, Son.”
If you haven’t had the opportunity to witness a mounted
shooting competition, then by all means don’t miss next
year’s event. It seemed the entire population of Penn
Valley and surrounding areas turned out in full costume
and character for this festival. Gentlemen wore boots,
spurs and six shooters. Ladies had flowing skirts
draped over the back of their horses as they galloped
around the arena shooting balloons which gained them
points and lots of admirable applause.
Scott Gomes was the organizer for this event held the
weekend of June 5 in Penn Valley, CA. Over 4,000 people
attended the BBQ cook-off and rodeo competition. This
event was put on by the Penn Valley Community Rodeo
Association to help raise money for local high school
scholarships. Friday night the Mars family of Mars
Mobile Grilling, Brian Ross of Dragon’s Breath BBQ and
Lenard Sanders put on a BBQ dinner for the community.
That dinner along with the next day’s activities raised
over $4,000 that will be awarded to high school seniors
this coming year.
The IBCA BBQ competition drew in 24 teams and was a
qualifier for the Jack Daniels draw. Teams cooked for
the contest and then served samples to the public. The
Grand Championship went to Ric Gilbert of Ric’s
Righteous Ribs. The Reserve Grand Champion was Richard
Holquin of Cecil’s Smokin’ BBQ.
From Charlene Hahn, Old Farts.
THANK YOU—THANK YOU—
I would like to take this time to say THANK YOU to
those of you that help Duane & I out at the
cook-offs. As most of you know, I’m legally blind
and can only see shadows. It is very helpful when
you come up and speak to me that you identify
yourself so that I will know who I’m talking to.
I am so grateful to have so many friends that we
have made over the years that we have been cooking.
Again, I just wanted to tell each of you how much I
appreciate your friendship and all the help that you
have given me. BBQ Cooks are the BEST!
Our condolences to Gary & Debbie Cole, Hot Coles, on the
loss of Gary’s sister; Randy DeVries, Burnt BBQ, for the
loss of his wife, Chris, after an eight year battle with
cancer; and to Larry Lancaster, Larry’s Justa Cookin’
for the loss of his Dad. Please keep these families in
your thoughts and prayers.
