Smokin’ on the Rio

By Jan Canterbury

Don and I took a couple of days off to attend this State Championship event.  We arrived and were greeted by friends and also competition volunteers who inspected our meat and made sure we were settled.  The people who help Chuck Selman with this event are some of the friendliest folks you will meet and the fact that they brought us each a free case of beer has nothing to do with that comment.  Each team received a case of beverages as a “thank you” for attending the event.

Chuck said there were a few less teams than attended last year, but at 87 teams, it was still a great turn out.  They had a kid’s que Saturday morning that I didn’t know about until after it was over.  Next year I will make it a point to check that out.  The general public which consisted mostly of “winter Texans” was also friendly and very curious about the bbq event.  We met a lot of people throughout the day and enjoyed talking to them.

As the smoke cleared and the LOUD music next door stopped, the awards started.  Ronnie Wade was named Grand Champion!  Congratulations!  It was a pretty tight race.  I would like to say thanks to Tim Lemon and his crew who made the judging run smoothly (and they looked great, too) and Chuck and his people who took care of us on the outside.  If you haven’t made the trip to the valley to attend this cook off, it is well worth the trip!  Congratulations to everybody who had their name called.  Check the website for a full list of the winners.  That’s it from Conroe!  Good luck and have fun wherever your pit is parked next.

What Jan didn’t say is that she was Reserve Grand Champion.  Congratulations to all that got their names called.

Winners can be viewed on the events page.

Attention Cookers:

We have found large Styrofoam trays for the chicken halves at large events of 60+.  They seem to be a little deeper but not quite as wide as the metal trays were, therefore, if you need to cut the backbone out of your chicken to make it fit better then do so.

The lid must close on the container or it will be considered a marked tray.

We are not dictating the size of chicken that you cook but as stated above, the lid must close

I have received several calls    regarding the Great American Cook-off, Memorial Day week-end in Kansas City.

Anyone that was Grand Champion at a sanctioned event with at least 10 teams are qualified for this event.  I have sent the list of all of the IBCA winners from last year and if you are interested in attending this event I would suggest that you go to their website www.thinkbbq.com and get the information or email tracy@thinkbbq.com—she will have the list.

Congratulations to all the winners.

The Irving Elks Lodge BBQ this year had 47 teams participate without rain this year.  The road work made it difficult to get into the area but Michael Christy and the BBQ Committee did a good job of getting everyone into their places.

Laura with the help of Jami Gregory and Sheila Williams ran the judging and the ladies of the Elks Lodge made sure that they had judges.

LaGarto Community Store benefiting the Halo Flight was a big success this year with 50 teams participating.  Report has it that they raised $20,000 for the Halo Flight.

Tim Lemon and Bob Baggerly were the Head Judge at this event and Jim Benson did a good job of having judges available.

Kaufman County JR Livestock Show BBQ was down a few teams this year but the weather wasn’t favorable for those that don’t have RV’s.  Saturday morning it was 26 degrees but the day turned out to be great.  Carole Ritter and Vanessa Graham worked the judging area.

Bill Thornton does a great job with this event each year—they served hamburgers on Friday night to the cooks and doughnuts, orange juice and coffee on Saturday morning.

This is a nice place to have an event and Bill would like to make it grow.  Mark this event on your calendar for next year.

Stockdale Smokin’ Spring BBQ, Stockdale, TX had 35 teams this year up 15 from last year.  This is an area that the events are growing and a lot of new members are coming from the South Texas and Rio Grande area.

Laverne reported that the VFW 4692 BBQ, Bryan was a good event with 29 teams participating.  The teams survived the cold temperatures and had a great time.

St. Jude’s Bayou “LA State Championship” BBQ moved to Gonzales, LA this year to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center.  This sight had full hook-ups for the RV’s and there were 28 teams participating.

Lynn & Andy Hollerman were Head Judge at this event with Bo Jackson assisting.

It is encouraging to see that there are more LA teams becoming involved in the events — there were only 6 teams from out of state at this event.  Usually 1/2 of the teams are from out of state.

West Vol. Fire Dept. BBQ, West, TX—what a pretty week-end with the exception of the wind.  Friday it was close to 90 and around 75 on Saturday.

All the teams were getting an early start on their suntans this year with 114 teams participating.

Teams from all over Texas participated in this event and one team from Paola, KS ventured down to enjoy the warm weather.

Cody Dragoo, George Nors and the Volunteer Fire department do an outstanding job each year on this event.

With the increase in prize money from $10,000 to $15,000, thanks to Czech Stop, paying 15 places in each

category the money was spread out to various winners.

The Kid’s Que this year had 32 youngsters with 21 in the age group 5—10 and 11 in the older group.  Each child got a trophy with larger trophies going to 1st thru 3rd in each age group.  If you have never seen a Kid’s Que—check it out at the next event that has one, they are fun to watch and this is our next generation of cooks.

If you have never been to this event, mark your calendar for next year the 3rd week-end in March.

We wish everyone GOOD LUCK on the smoking trail as there are events almost every week-end that you can attend.

ATTENTION:  Due to the rising cost of printing and postage, we would like to know if any members would rather get the IBCA Newsletter from our website  www.ibcabbq.org  under Smokin’ Log rather than snail mail.  We realize that everyone doesn’t has a computer but this would be a BIG savings for the organization.

If anyone would like to write an article on any IBCA event that you attend, we are always looking for things to go into the newsletter. This is your newsletter and we would like to supply information that you enjoy.
