Wounded Warrier Project BBQ Mineota, TX
By Jim Worsham
Election Year

This turned out to be a good event, if Bill Hamby had more help this could be a Great c/o. he only had 1 man to help him put this together.

They have 150 RV sites with electricity. It's right behind Brookshires grocery store but it feels like you are nowhere close to town. We had 20 teams & 12 bean   entries, 8 open entries. Jimmy had 1st beans which paid $120 and he donated it back to the Wounded Warriors Project and I donated my services & supplies.

There were a lot of tears shed by some of the Vets because the cook teams at this event went above and beyond to help with this Wounded Warrior Project by cooking extra briskets & chicken that Bill Hamby brought them. 69 extra briskets and 3 cases of chicken were cooked.

I never heard not one cook complain about a single thing. I think everyone there really took the time to reflect on  ALL of our Troops and what they and their families are doing for US.

I think the 20 teams that were there this weekend deserve a pat on the back for all their support given towards this project, I know I for one am very proud to know each and everyone of them.

It is time to start thinking as to who you would like to be running your organization.  The position of Executive Director (Jeff Shivers) and 2 Board of Directors at Large  (Laverne Akin & Michelle Wade) terms will end September 1, 2007.

The terms for these offices are 2 years.  The Board also consist of 2 representatives from each “PIT” and a Secretary/Treasurer (Lynn).

Nominations will be accepted by mail or email being sent to the   office.

Tidbits & Cook-Offs

3-17-07  West Vol. Fire Dept. BBQ,

West, TX            101 Teams

This event is one to mark your calendar to attend next year. Cody Dragoo, George Nors, Jr., and the rest of the BBQ Committee do a great job each year on making sure that the cooks are taken care of.  We have people that have worked in the judging area each year that we have been there and they are great help—wish we could get help like this at all of our events.

Congratulations to David Higginbotham, Big “H” Cooking Team, who ran away with the points for Grand Champion.  Out of a possible 45 points, David accrued 44 points with 2 first places and a second.  Congrats to all that got their name called — this is one of the toughest competitions in the area.

St. Jude’s Bayou BBQ, Maurepas, LA.           37 Teams

This year’s event grew 10 teams from last year and was a great event.  Charles works diligently each year to make sure that this is a good event and that they raise money for the St. Jude’s Hospital — I heard they raised approx. $10,000 this year.  Several Texas teams traveled to this event trying to win the LA State Championship, and congratulations to Larry Bittner, Guzzlin’ Gourmets, on winning GC at this event, and to all that had their name called.

3-24-07  Brazos Valley API BBQ, Caldwell, TX       32 Teams

Cathy Demottier reported that this is a great event each year.  This was the first year to be sanctioned with IBCA .  From what I understand the calcutta at this event is really big.

Another new event this year was the Old Fiddlers Festival & BBQ, Corpus Christi, TX      17 teams

Reports are that this was a fun event and has plenty of room for growth.  Congrats to all that got to make the walk in the awards ceremonies.

Rosenberg Masonic BBQ, Rosenberg, TX    25 Teams

With 8 more teams than last year, Russell Coleman, BCB Cookers, was named GC again this year.  This is a great event with good facilities and room to grow.  Watch for the date of next year’s event.

Oil Patch BBQ, Kilgore, TX            41 teams

In spite of the rain on Friday night and Saturday morning, we had 41 teams participate in this event.  I would like to thank Cindy & Darrell Weatherford, Mena, AR., for coming down and helping in the judging area.  We were a little worried about having enough judges when the rain set in but Gene & Darren made sure that we had judges.  Thanks to everyone involved in this event for making it a success.

Cleveland VFW 1839 Spring BBQ, Cleveland, TX      19 teams

Darrell Barski reports that this is a great event with great facilities to have the event.  Congrats to Jimbo Williams, Son of a Brisket Eater, on being named GC and to all others that got their names called.

Irving Knights of Columbus,   Irving, TX            28 Teams

I understand that there was a lot of wind and rain at this event on Friday night but everyone survived and had a great event.

Kerrville Easter Classic BBQ & Chili, Kerrville, TX     26 teams

What a beautiful setting for an event, right on the banks of the Guadalupe River—but the weather wasn’t very nice this year.  It was cold and wet with rain, sleet and snow falling at the same time but 26 BBQ teams and approx. 30 Chili teams  toughed it out and stayed til the end.

Barry Shaw and the Elk Lodge volunteers were there to help with anything that we needed.  Thanks to Ronnie Wade for letting us use his propane heater—it was nice to back up to and warm up when we needed to.
